How to Know When It's Time to Stop Googling and Start Talking to Someone

The Waiting Game We Play With Ourselves

There's a particular kind of math people do when they're struggling. They think: I'll give it another month. I'll see how I feel after the holidays. Things will get better when work slows down. It's not that bad yet.

The "not that bad yet" benchmark is one of the most common reasons people wait longer than they should to seek support. We're socialized to believe that therapy is for crisis, for rock-bottom moments that make compelling chapters in memoirs. But mental health doesn't work that way, and waiting for things to get worse isn't a strategy. It's just waiting.

Signs That It's Time to Talk to Someone

None of these require a diagnosis. They're simply signals worth paying attention to:

  • You're consistently exhausted in ways that sleep doesn't fix.

  • You've started withdrawing from people or activities you used to enjoy.

  • You're managing emotions with food, alcohol, scrolling, or busyness rather than actually feeling them.

  • The same patterns keep showing up in your relationships, and you don't know why.

  • You feel like you're functioning fine on the outside but something quiet and persistent is off on the inside.

  • You've had the thought "I should probably talk to someone" more than once, and then talked yourself out of it.

You Don't Need a Reason Big Enough

Therapy doesn't require a defining moment. You don't need to have survived something dramatic or be in the middle of a crisis to deserve support. Wanting to understand yourself better, work through old patterns, or simply have a space to think clearly are reasons enough.

At Birchwood Counseling, we work with people who are managing okay and people who aren't managing at all, and everyone in between. Wherever you are right now, you don't have to stay there alone. Reaching out is the hardest part. We'll take it from there.
